Ear Options

When puppies leave our home, their ears are natural.  Sometimes that means they will be floppy but sometimes their ears go up, depends on the dog, the ear leather, etc.  Besides the fact that the vet I use for ear crops does not do it until they are 12-16 weeks of age, people have different likes and dislikes.  I leave it up to you.

It is hard to know what your puppies ears will do as an adult.  Ears need calcium.  As they are growing and teething, the calcium goes to their teeth rather than their ears.

  Natural, floppy ears

Our loal vets crop, very nice - not a show crop but nicely done

Taller show crop with less bell

  Short crop with more bell

One ear up & one ear down

My preference - depends on the dog and what their ears look like, especially compared to their head.  My biggest warning on ear crops - look at previous ear crops the vet has done, even if it's just pictures.  I've seen some horrible ear crops.  Some say our local vet doesn't do the "proper" show ears; however, with ours he did nice perfect cuts with ears that match.

Are you ready for the work and time involved?  I've had some ear crops that only took 3 weeks and 3 vet trips.  When we tried the tall show crops on Rocket and Blaze, Rocket's crop failed because he kept tearing the bandages so I gave up after 6 weeks because I didn't feel it was fair to him.  I have been taping Blaze's ears for 3 months, sometimes putting him in a harness and they are still not standing right.  Looks like they eventually will stand but it maybe another month or more.  I've heard of some using the "toilet paper" method until 9 months of age.  So if you're up to the money and work involved: A Nicely cropped ear is gorgeous!
